Three questions to ask clients for feedback as a freelancer or consultant
For consultants, and freelancers, client feedback at the end of a job is invaluable.
Learning about the client’s experience of working with you helps you improve your offering for next time and consider ways of adapting to any challenges. It’s also affirming to get positive feedback on your work.
It’s important to know what clients find helpful, regarding the way you work, and what they might prefer to do differently next time.
Feedback is a two-way street. As a consultant, or freelancer, it’s important to share your thoughts regarding the process of working with a client. This can help build a healthy working relationship.
There are three questions to ask your client at the end of a job:
What worked well?
What could be improved?
What have we both learned through working on this project?
I find it’s useful to schedule an “exit interview” at the end of a job to open the space for feedback. I’ll email my questions, along with an agenda, ahead of the meeting so the client has time to think through them.
Feedback is not something to be afraid of. Constructive feedback given and received in a supportive environment will help you grow as a consultant or freelancer.
